TitleMiroir Odontoscopique
DescriptionDental Mirror and pick (odontoscope) in red leatherette box. Dark red crescent shaped box with gold painted decoration at edges. Bottom of box is green. Metal push fastening on curved portion. Interior is lined in green velvet, and houses a mirror on the inside of the lid. Bottom contains a removable mirror in silver metal, with elongated handles tipped with a ball at each end. The engraving on the reverse reads ' Miroir odontoscopique invente par Marmont Dentiste'. A further inscription around the curved edge of the mirror reads 'Rue Nueve des Petits Champs No. 15' - possibly a makers address. Housed above the mirror is a small dental pick with twisted mid section.
Similar to a mirror made by Marmont for Josephine Bonaparte. There are no hallmarks to suggest that this example is silver, unlike the example made for Bonaparte. Aside from the address, the two examples are otherwise identical, and it is possible this mirror is also by Marmont.
Julien Marmont (1774-1852) began practicing dentistry in 1800, and began attending Josephine Bonaparte around 1804. He published a number of works, most notably in 1839, entitled 'Esthiomenia', a new technique for sealing cavities.
