DescriptionA hand-held spectroscope sometimes called a spectrograph or spectrometer is an optical apparatus for the analysis of light split into its componant colours, much like how a prism splits white light into a rainbow. This example features two parallel tubes with an eye peice to look through, a small mirror at the end of one of the tubes and an adjustable shutter. Made by the Franz Schmidt & Haensch company founded 1864 in Berlin; which still operates as a family-owned scientific instrument manufacturer. It comes in a small, black, rectangular box with a purple lining. The inside of the top lid reads 'Franz Schmidt & Haensch BERLIN S.42'. The device is engraved with 'Franz Schmidt & Haensch. Berlin, J. No 789. D.R.G.M. No 350066.
