DescriptionMamma, showing chronic mastitis.
From a female aged 50 years who had noticed the lump in the breast a week before operation. On examination the breast, which was somewhat enlarged, presented a diffuse nodularity. The other breast was normal and there were no palpable glands in the axillae.
The specimen shows the typical features of well marked chronic mastitis. The corpus mammae, which is somewhat enlarged, is of firm fibrous character and contains numerous small cysts, several of which obviously communicate with dilated ducts close below the nipple. Microscopically there are the changes characteristic of fibrocystic mastopathia with adenosis and fibrosis. There is proliferative activity of the duct epithelium, without transgression of the duct limits. In places the epithelium shows degenerative changes (pale epithelium). There is no evidence of malignancy.
