Left mamma (breast), showing tuberculosis

Object numberGC.4489
TitleLeft mamma (breast), showing tuberculosis
DescriptionAnterior segment of a vertical coronal section of a left mamma (breast), showing tuberculosis.
Removed by operation from an adult female, along with the axillary lymph nodes.
The nipple is flattened and the inferior half of the areola is swollen and annular. Lateral to the areole the skin is brown and discoloured around the slightly depressed opening of a sinus, and a puckered cicatrix pear the lateral extremity of the ovoid portion of skin is the result of an axillary lymph node tuberculous abscess. The corpus mammae is extensive, in places condensed and fibrous and in three places presenting considerable tuberculous abscesses, two of which are apparently intra-acinar with well defined and thickened walls. Here and there throughout the breast are areas of caseation, and the axillary lymph nodes are large and necrotic with central suppuration.
On microscopic examination there is typical interstitial tuberculous mastitis.
