TitleKeeler "Vertex Dioptrescope" Electric Focimetre
CreatorKeeler
DescriptionAn early model (Model No. 268) of the "Vertex Dioptrescope" manufactured by Keeler. Focimetres were used to check whether the spectacles supplied to a patient matched the required specification (as opposed to identifying their prescription). If a patient had lost their previous prescription, the focimetre was necessary to test their current eyewear to see if it needed replacing following the latest eye examination. The first focimetre was introduced in America in 1912, its design originally based on a telescope and a test target. Keeler introduced their "Vertex Dioptrescope", the first British focimetre, in 1946. This was the company's only attempt at a focimetre. The development costs were immense and they decided not to update it even though it had proved popular. Later models were grey, meaning this black example would be one of the earlier models to be built. The dioptrescope was manufactured until about 1951, and was available from optical suppliers into the 1960s. The focal scale is read through the upper mirror set-up and measures to one eighth of a dioptre. EYE. 1999. 589
