Object numberED.CS.2018.34
TitlePortrait of Monro Secundus (1733-1817)
Creator Henry? Raeburn
DescriptionPortrait of Alexander Monro Secundus (1733-1817) with artist name given as Henry Raeburn (1756-1823). The portrait was donated by Mrs Chisholm wife of Professor Geoffrey Duncan Chisholm (1931-1994) PRCSEd (1988). There is a signiture on the back of the canvas (Raeburn) and the portrait is set in a gold frame.
Mrs Chisolm had the painting investigated at the National Portrait Gallery who advised that it was copy of Raeburn 'a rather clever piece of faking. The portrait itself has been cut out of a larger canvas and superimposed on an earlier and damaged canvas. This is obviously intended to simulate a painted oval surround of the type which is common in 17th and 18th century portraits.'
Production periodLate eighteenth/early nineteenth century
