Melanoma of Choroid

Object numberGC.14351
TitleMelanoma of Choroid
DescriptionMelanoma of the choroid of the eye, which is the pigmented vascular layer of the eyeball between the retina and the sclera.
One lateral margin of the tumour shows the expansion of the tumour into the choroidal tissues between Bruch’s membrane and the sclera. At the opposite margin Bruch’s hyaline membrane is intact. Aggregates of brown-black melanin pigment can be seen in the tumour.
Here, the tumour immediately external to membrane is heavily pigmented. There is also a thin layer of pigmented tumour internal to the membrane and there is an associated retinal detachment. The tumour is of mixed variety. Epithelial cells predominate and show little melanin. The spindle cell area is heavily pigmented.
