Alexander Gillespie served as a military surgeon in the West Indies, and then became surgeon to the Royal Infirmary. The inscription reads: Brother of Jean Gillespie (wife of James Donaldson) First surgeon to the hospital 1850 – 59 also one of the original governors. Gillespie’s Hospital and Donaldson’s Hospital (later became Donaldson’s School for the Deaf). Gillespie also became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
