TitleLaryngeal oedema
Creator Arthur Logan (1865-1939) TURNER
DescriptionLarynx, with the tongue and the pharynx and commencement of the oesophagus, laid open posteriorly, showing laryngeal oedema.
From a female aged 45 years ho complained of slight hoarseness with occasional dyspnoea. Her Wassermann blood reaction was positive and radiography showed fibrosis of both pulmonary apices, but she had no expectoration. There had been gummatous sores over the sternum and. clavicle. Laryngoscopy showed a pale and swollen epiglottis especially on its left side. There was no ulceration but there was oedema of the left aryepiglottic fold and of the mucosa over the left arytaenoid cartilage. The left ventricular fold was swollen; the right side of the larynx was normal. Four months later, with the onset of Stridor, asphyxia produced sudden death. On post mortem examination the laryngeal oedema was found bilateral, There was syphilitic aortitis and gummata of the liver.
The oedema involves the epiglottis and the aditus laryngis and is more pronounced on the left side than on the right. Some of tile serous effusion has been lost by osmosis during preparation of the specimen, and the swelling to that extent lessened. Intralaryngeal inspection shows the rima glottidis to be practically closed.
