The membrana tympani is destroyed posterior to the manubrium of the malleus. Through this opening are exposed the promontory, the fenestra vestibuli, and the fenestra cochleae. In the posterior osseous wail of the external acoustic meatus a large irregular fistulous opening communicates with the mastoid air-sinuses.
