A cat is depicted riding a bicycle (Stuart always rode a bicycle to the Royal Infirmary), a rugby ball, hockey stick, cricket bat and curling stones.
William James Stuart (1873-1959) was the son of a minister. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University where he graduated MA and then MBChB with Honours in 1899. He became a Fellow of the College in 1903. In 1914 he was mobilised as a Territorial Officer in the RAMC and saw service in Salonika. After the war he was appointed Surgeon to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Although he had by then retired, he resumed work in the Royal Infirmary for three years during World War II. He was President of the College from 1937 to 1939.
“Pussy” Stuart was a gentle kindly man who never owned a car. He would cycle to work and a large policeman who used to do traffic duty at the foot of Lothian Road would hold up all the traffic when he saw Stuart approaching. He was a “serene” man who excelled in his kindness and concern for his patients. He was a keen sportsman -in particular, rugby and cricket in his younger days and fishing and shooting latterly. He also played a major part in the formation and early successes of the blood transfusion movement in Edinburgh and was Chairman of the Executive of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Association. His former residents presented the Presidential Chair in the Council Room of the College.
