DescriptionA large heavily chased silver cup, weighing 80oz and a lid weighing 35oz. on a mahogany plinth. The chased arms of the Physicians are on one side and those of the Surgeons are on the other. The lid has the chased inscription “The Royal Colleges Golf Club MDCCCXC”, surmounted by the figure of Aesculapius.
The plinth is in two tiers and has two rows of silver medals with lists of names and scores. The top row has 24 medals from 1890 to 1913. The cup also has the inscription “Manufactured by Marshall and Sons, Goldsmiths to the Queen, 87 George Street, Edinburgh”.
The Colleges’ Golf Club was started in 1890 when the first Captain was Douglas Argyll Robertson. The magnificent trophy was presented by Sir John Chiene in 1898 to be presented to the winner of the Handicap event.
