In 1908, the Territorial Army was instituted and the 2nd Scottish Hospital was set up in Craigleith Poorhouse (now the Western General Hospital) as a military hospital. It was to be staffed in time of war by the doctors, surgeons and specialists in the city. After the war, the Officers’ Mess had money in hand and it was decided to use it to buy two bowls - “The Craigleith Bowls” - one of which was presented to the Royal College of Physicians by Sir Joseph Fayrer in 1922 and one to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Details of this and of the work of the hospital are given in William Guy’s “Memories and Digressions”.
