DescriptionA circular silver dish, Brook & Son, Edinburgh 1923, being an enlarged reproduction, the base engraved “Treasure of Traprain 1919 Enlarged Reproduction”.
On the base is inscribed “To Henry Alexis Thomson CMG MD FRCS Professor of Surgery, University of Edinburgh 1909-1923. Presented on the occasion of his retiring as a token of affection and esteem from his students”. It was donated by Mrs Thomson, widow of Alexis Thomson.
At Traprain Law in East Lothian is the site of a prehistoric hill fort. Excavations in 1919 produced a silver bowl and over 100 pieces of silver - Roman jugs, goblets and spoons as well as coins dated 410-415AD. This is a reproduction of one of the dishes found at the site. The original, with the rest of the treasure, is in the Royal
Museum of Scotland.
