DescriptionThe plain silver cigar box has a plain handle in the centre of the lid.The hallmark is Edinburgh 1965.
It is inscribed: “Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 1965” on the front and “Presented by G I Scott, President 1964 - 1967” on the back.
George Ian Scott (1907 - 1989) was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University where he graduated MA in 1929 and MBChB in 1933. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1937. A distinguished ophthalmologist, he joined the RAMC in 1939 and served in the Middle East where he rose to the rank of Brigadier. After the war, he returned to Edinburgh as Assistant ophthalmic surgeon becoming full surgeon in 1953. In 1954, he was appointed as the first incumbent of the Forbes Chair of Ophthalmology which he held until he retired in 1972.
On the sudden death of James Mason Brown, he was appointed President of the College, the fifth ophthalmologist to hold that office. He was appointed Surgeon Oculist to the Queen in Scotland in 1965. He was influential in the establishment of the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion.
