Otoplasty, or plastic operations on the ear, are still common. Missing ears can be reconstructed using cartilage grafts and skin flaps, though it requires several operations and great expertise to make an aesthetically pleasing ear.
Radoford Tanzer of Hanover, New Hampshire, was the acknowledged pioneer in this field. The correction of prominent or "bat" ears is a common operation. Jack Mustarde of Glasgow described one technique, of which modified versions are still used.
