DescriptionJoseph Bell's Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh gown and cap, c.1880s.
Dark purple-blue silk gown with pale lavender-blue insets decorated with white frogging and tassels. On a leather label stitched into the gown: "Christie and Kilpatrick, by appointment Robe Makers to the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh - registered No. 450636."
This is the gown worn by Jospeh Bell in his portrait by George Fiddes Watt (1873-1960) of 1896, also owned by the College, accession number ED.CS.2010.34.
Both this item and ED.CS.2013.25-1 belonged to Joseph Bell, who gave them to his cousin, Dr. William Bruce Bell (1871-1926). William was House Surgeon and Physician at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh in 1893/4 and House Surgeon at Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Sick Children in 1894/5. He was elected a Fellow of the RCSEd in 1907. It is possible Jospeh gave his cousin these robes as a gift at this time.
