David Wallace was educated at Dollar Academy and Edinburgh University, where he graduated in 1884. After graduating, he was house surgeon and later assistant to John Chiene, Assistant Surgeon, Royal Infirmary 1892 and Surgeon 1908-1923.
He served in the South African War where he was in charge of the expeditionary Edinburgh Hospital. In 1908, on the formation of the Territorial Force, he was included in the staff of the 2nd Scottish General Hospital which was mobilised in August 1914. He had also played an important part in the formation of an Edinburgh branch of the Red Cross Society in 1908 and he was appointed Commissioner of the Red Cross for the south-eastern district of Scotland, a post which took precedence over his Army duties. For his services he was knighted in 1920.
Sir David was an excellent general surgeon who had a special interest in urology which was recognised by his election to the French Association of Urology.
From 1921 to 1923, he was president of the Royal College of Surgeons. He was also Deputy Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh and LL D Edinburgh 1930.
