Oil on canvas, c.1895, by George Reid (1841-1913)
William Turner was born in Lancaster, the son of an upholsterer who died when he was only five. He was brought up by his mother and received his early education at a private school. At the age of fifteen he was apprenticed to a local surgeon, and, a year later, went to St Bartholomew's Hospital, London where he graduated MB London in 1857.
He was chosen by John Goodsir in 1854 to be his senior demonstrator in anatomy and, owing to Goodsir's failing health, he immediately took over the major part of the teaching of anatomy in Edinburgh University. When Goodsir died in 1867 Turner was appointed to succeed him.
His subsequent career was full of honours. He was elected President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1882. He served on the General Medical Council for almost thirty years and was its President in 1898. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was knighted in 1886 and he was appointed Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University in 1903.
Turner was unrivalled as a teacher of anatomy and was the outstanding figure in British anatomy in the second half of the 19th century. In his time, he taught many future professors. He was also an outstanding administrator and was largely responsible for raising funds for the building of the New University buildings and the McEwan Hall.
His most lasting contribution was probably in medical education. He insisted on the right of universities to grant their own degrees while supporting the idea of joint qualifying boards outside the universities.
He founded the Journal of Anatomy and Physiology in 1867 and was its editor for many years and, in 1887, he was one of the originators of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
