TitleLarynx showing sarcoma
DescriptionLarynx, with the base of the tongue, the hypopharynx, and the cervical portion of the trachea, showing a sarcoma.
From an adult male who died suddenly from asphyxia and who was not known to have had any previous throat symptoms or medical attendance.
In the right piriform recess, by an attachment involving its anterior wall, a tumour has originated and extended superiorly to above the level of the epiglottis, and inferiorly into the commencement of the oesophagus. It measures 115 mm. in length and 60 mm. in maximum breadth. Superiorly the lateral half of its rounded extremity is ragged, and this irregularity extends along its anterior surface into the piriform recess. The medial border of the tumour is rounded and passes to the left of the mesial plane, and from the superior part of its anterior surface there projects a conical tumour-mass which passes into and effectually blocks the aditus laryngis. Microscopic examination showed the tumour to be a sarcoma.
