TitleSeptic osteomyelitis
Creator Robert Wilson (1880-1940) Matthews (Artist)
Description"Water colour drawing of a right Tibia, soft parts and part of the foot showing acute septic osteomyelitis. From a boy aged 7 years in whom an alleged contusion of the leg three weeks before admission to hospital was followed by great pain sleeplessness and a rise of temperature. On admission a large subperiosteal abscess of the tibia was freely incised and a counter opening made behind for drainage. Three days later a copious haemorrhage occurred posterior to the bone and a week later amputation through the femoral condyles discovered a septic arthritis of the knee.
The periosteum has been stripped by subperiosteal suppuration from the proximal two thirds of the medial surface of the tibial diaphysis leaving the bone smooth and apparently avascular.
