Sarcoma of the nose

Object numberGC.968
TitleSarcoma of the nose
DescriptionThe right facial bones, cleared of their soft parts, showing a sarcoma of the right cavity of the nose
From a young adult male in whom epistaxis (nose bleeding) recurred with increasing severity during ten months. The nasal tumour was obvious, and incision of the cheek exposed the growth through the wall of the maxillary air-sinus, where a molar tooth had been previously extracted. There was much anaemia and some dysphagia.
The tumour forms a fleshy polypus depending from the roof of the nose, filling the right nasal cavity, and extending into the right maxillary air-sinus, with much destruction of the adjacent bone. It is lobulated and apparently of soft consistency. It protrudes from the choanae and extends into the infratemporal fossa. Microscopic examination shows the structure of a round-cell sarcoma.
