TitleCase of Opthalmic instruments
CreatorSavigny (Manufacturer), Sharp & Smith (Manufacturer)
DescriptionA case of ophthalmic instruments, the case being of varnished wood with brass fittings and a brass plate engraved with the name 'Edw. S. P. Bedford.' – see attached biography of Edward Samuel Picard Bedford (d.1875) MRCS (1823), FRCSEng (1854). Formerly belonging to Peter Ascroft (1906-1965) FRCSEng (1931)
There are twelve instruments in the case, ten of which seem to be part of the original set. All of these ten have ivory handles and all except one have cross-hatched grips. Two are marked with Savigny & Co. which dates the set to c.1810-c.1855. Three have broken points (pre-existing damage not sustained while in our care).
The other two instruments appear more modern, having steel handles and one stamped 'Sharp & Smith.' This company formed in 1876 so these instruments may have been added at a later date if the original owner Bedford died in 1875.
In a velvet-lined compartment with ivory handle there are two long needles and six nails with angled-heads.
There is another compartment under the lid of the box that has places for instruments such as tweezers and scissors but these are not present.
