Oesophageal Bougie

Object numberED.CS.2012.4-3
TitleOesophageal Bougie
Creator London Mayer (Manufacturer)
DescriptionAn oesophageal bougie with a hollow handle (to hold spare metal olives), flexible wire tube and range of attachable weighted metal olives. While the bougie handle is marked 'Mayer, London,' the metal olives seem to be of a number of different makes including possibly Down Bros, due to a small plate with said name stamped on it included in the olive box. This type of bougie would have been used to dilate resistant or complicated strictures of the oesophagus with graduated sized and weighted olives being available.
