TitleCautery Iron
DescriptionCautery iron with wooden handle, brass fitting, steel shaft and wedge-shaped head, dating from around 1700. Cautery irons would have been applied to wounds to reduce bleeding and the chances of infection (although bacteria were not identified as a source of infection until the late nineteenth century). Effective anaesthetic was also not invented until the nineteenth century so cauterising an open wound would have been a very painful procedure for the patient.
