In 1861, the same year that Lister took up post as a surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, a brand new surgical block was opened in his name, comprising eight wards - each with 16 beds and a nurse's room - and a new operating theatre. Ward 24 was particularly identified with Lister's pioneering work in reducing infection rates. The Lister Ward, from which this chair is said to originate, was demolished in 1924.
