TitleThyroid, retrosternal Goitre
DescriptionSpecimen and Histological Glass Slide x1
Thyroid - retrosternal goitre. From a female aged 60 years who had been aware of a goitre for ten years. The preparation consists of two masses. The upper is somewhat conical and represents the right lobe, isthmus and part of the left lobe. This conical portion projected upwards into the neck. The lower mass, which is elongated, was situated in the anterior mediastinum and was firmly adherent to the pericardium. The capsule is torn and likewise the thyroid tissue due to manipulation during operation. A stony, hard calcified area in the lower part is exposed, Both masses have the appearance of a simple nodular goitre.
Micro-sections show dilated vesicles well filled with deeply staining colloid, lined by cubical or flattened epithelium. There are a few areas of non-acinated cells suggesting regenerative elements. The appearance is that of an irregularly involuted nodular goitre with no histological evidence of hyperfunction.
