TitleThyroid showing a retrosternal goitre
DescriptionThyroid of a 78 year old male, showing a retrosternal goitre.
A retrosternal goitre describes enlarged thyroid glands that have extended into the mediastinum. This example was found as an incidental finding at necropsy. The right lobe and the isthmus of the thyroid show no abnormality of note. By contrast the left lobe is greatly enlarged and reaching the arch of the aorta - displacing both trachea and the left common carotid artery and adjoining structures.
