James Ross was born in South America but educated at Merchiston Castle School and Edinburgh University, where he graduated MBChB in 1934. In 1947, he graduated MD with commendation.
During World War II he served in France, the Middle East and Europe, where he took part in the Battle of Anzio. After the war he held appointments in Leith Hospital, the Eastern General and Edenhall Hospitals and Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He was Honorary Consulting Surgeon to the British Army in Scotland from 1970 to 1976.
He was Professor of Anatomy at the King Saud University, Riyadh from 1983 to 1984 and was a member of the Armed Forces Medical Advisory Board of the United Kingdom. He contributed to the literature on Surgical Anatomy, General Surgery and Urology.
He has been a devoted servant of the Royal College of Surgeons. He was Honorary Secretary from 1960 to 1968, Vice-President from 1971 to 1973 and President 1973 to 1976. A keen historian of the College, he played a major part in the completion of the Jules Thorne Historical Museum as well as writing ‘The Edinburgh School of Surgery after Lister’.
