‘Will’ Mayo was made an Honorary Fellow of the College on the occasion of its quatercentenary celebrations.
He was the co-founder with his brother Charles of the world-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. A small hospital organised under the local branch of the Sisters of St Francis in Rochester developed into St Mary's Hospital and it was there that the Mayo Clinic was founded in 1889. The clinic was famous for the number of operations carried out and for the high success rate. Will Mayo specialised in surgery of the stomach while the researches of his brother Charles are said to have reduced the death rate from goitre by 50%. During World War I, Will was chief consultant for all surgical services in the American forces.
Mayo visited Edinburgh in 1907 and was particularly impressed by Harold Stiles whom he described as ‘an indefatigable worker of the American type’.
