The tympanum has been opened and shows the ossicles in situ and the anterior wall of the auditory tube in its entirety has been removed. The semicircular canals are exposed by removal of the superficial bone and the bony cochlea has been laid open, a fine bristle indicating the entrance of the cochlear nerve. Immediately posterior to this the acoustic and facial nerves are seen entering the internal acoustic meatus.
