Geoffrey Chisholm, a New Zealander, was educated at Scots College, Wellington, at Malvern College, Worcs. and at St Andrews University where he graduated MBChB in 1955 and ChM (High Commendation) in 1965.
After obtaining Fellowships of both the Edinburgh and English Royal College of Surgeons, he spent a year in the United States of America as Research Fellow in Urology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon at Hammersmith Hospital and Senior Lecturer at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in 1967 and was appointed to St Peter's Hospital and the Institute of Urology in 1971. In 1977, he was appointed Professor of Surgery in the University of Edinburgh and Director of the Nuffield Transplant Unit at the Western General Hospital.
His principal interests are in investigative urology, renal transplantation, medical writing and surgical education.
He was President of the European Society of Urological Oncology and Endocrinology in 1985, President of the British Association of Urological Surgeons 1966-69, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 1988-91 and President of the Harveian Society of Edinburgh 1992. He was Managing Editor of Urological Research 1977-85 and Editor of the British Journal of Urology 1978-93.
In 1985 he was awarded the Francisco Diaz medal by the Spanish Urological Society, the Pybus medal by the North of England Surgical Society in 1986, the St Peters medal of the British Association of Urological Surgeons in 1989 and the Silver medal of the Danish Surgical Society in 1989. He received the Hon FRACS and Hon FCS,SA in 1990 and was awarded FRCPE in 1990 and FRCPSG in 1991. He was appointed CBE in 1992.
