Patrick Stewart Boulter was born in Annan, Dumfriesshire and educated at Carlisle Grammar School. He completed his National Service with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers before starting his medical studies at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London in 1950. He graduated MB BS with Honours and Gold Medal in 1955 and also received the Handcock Prize from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
He was a lecturer in Surgery at the Middlesex Hospital and Senior Registrar at the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary and at Guy’s Hospital, London. He was appointed Consultant Surgeon to the Royal Surrey County Hospital and the Regional Oncology centre, Guildford, Surrey, before being appointed Honorary Professor in Surgical Science at the University of Surrey.
Professor Boulter was President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 1991 – 1994.
His special surgical interests and publications were in breast, skin and endocrine disease. His unit in Guildford and the Edinburgh Breast team of Sir Patrick Forrest were pioneers of early detection of breast cancer in Britain and the management of minimal scree-detected disease. The University of Surrey Endocrine Unit with which he was associated has had a major interest and management of functioning endocrine tumours.
Apart from skiing and fly fishing, Professor Boulter’s main hobby was mountaineering and he has climbed the Himalayas, the Alps the Rockies and other ranges of the world. He was a member of the Alpine Club and a past President of the Association of British Members of the Swiss Alpine Club.
