Skull with gastric metastatic carcinoma

Object numberGC.5364
TitleSkull with gastric metastatic carcinoma
DescriptionPortion of calvaria showing areas of limited destruction due to metastatic carcinoma.
From a multipara aged 68 years whose primary carcinoma was pyloric. The metastases to bone were wide-spread and included affection of the skull and the mandible.
Metastatic implantations which would be conveyed to the bones through the blood stream have produced a localized area of destruction which has perforated the inferior surface of the centrum of the epistropheus, a focus in the root of the costal element of the right transverse process and in the anterior extremity of the left lamina of the 3rd cervical vertebra and a destruction of the posterior two-thirds of the centrum of the 5th cervical vertebra. Each metastatic defect shows more destruction of the cancellous bone than of the bony surfaces, a proof that the carcinoma cells have spread from within outwards and not vice versa.
