DescriptionPlaster model of a shoulder showing consition after excision of the head of the humerus. This is a healed gunshot wound from a soldier wounded in the American Civil War (1861-1865).
The surgeon, instead of amputating, incised the joint in accordance with Sir Charles Bell's teaching and removed the shattered head of the bone.
The cast shows the irregular cicatrix of the excision and the flattened condition of the shoulder under the deltoid muscle.
