DescriptionWet specimen.
Tongue, larynx, trachea and lungs showing a foreign body perforating the oesophagus.
From a male aged 9 months who was supposed to be suffering from bronchopneumonia. Ten days from the commencement of the illness he appeared very ill. The temperature was 102° and there was a frequent metallic cough. Auscultation found a few moist rales throughout the chest with a wheezing sound on expiration. Radiography showed a small dense shadow superior to the bifurcation of the trachea and above this a diffuse shadow extending towards the apex of the right lung.
Death occurred suddenly while swabbing the pharynx preliminary to direct ocular inspection. Immediate tracheotomy was of no avail. On post-mortem examination the base of a large bone stud was found in the oesophagus through the posterior wall of which the head of the stud had ulcerated and formed an abscess in relation to the centrum of the third thoracic vertebra. A thin lamina of bone separated the abscess in the vertebral centrum from the spinal canal and at this part was a localized inflammation of the spinal meninges. (Douglas Guthrie. Proc. Roy. Soc. Med. London 1921. xiv. section laryngol. 63.)
