DescriptionHypopharynx showing post-cricoid carcinoma, in a woman aged 54 years.

The tumour is seen in the mucosa of the hypopharynx where it forms a raised ulcerated plaque breaking down at the border of the laryngeal cartilage to form a fistula into the trachea. The tumour has infiltrated through the oesophageal wall and into the para-oesophagus where it surrounds the great veins. The venous thrombi can be seen in the superior vena cava and the internal jugular veins.
Microscopically the tumour is a well differentiated squamous carcinoma.
