DescriptionIslet cell tumour of Pancreas. From a male aged 24 years.
The preparation consists of half the tumour removed at operation. It is hemispherical and measures about 1 cm. in diameter. The colour has been lost during fixation in formaldehyde. The surface is rough due, as is seen in the low magnification photomicrograph, to the irregular fibrous capsule and adherent fragments of compressed pancreatic tissue. On the cut surface some of the friable tumour tissue has escaped leaving little cavities. The microsections show an irregular capsule and broad intersections consisting of collagenous fibrous tissue among which lie masses of tumour cells arranged for the most part in branching solid trabeculae separated by strands of fibrous tissue and vessels. The cells closely resemble those of the islets in a normal pancreas.
