Major portion of the tongue, showing carcinoma. From a male aged 58 years who had noticed a small papule on the right border of the tongue five months previously. The middle third of the dorsum of the right half of the tongue is occupied by an irregular ulcer, the margin of which infiltrates the surrounding tissue. It measures 33 mm anteroposteriorly and 18 mm. transversely. The surface is warty and irregular and slightly raised above the surrounding level. Microscopic examination shows a squamous-cell carcinoma which extensively infiltrates the muscles.
