DescriptionPharynx, laid open from posteriorly with the tongue, larynx and portion of the trachea showing syphilitic ulceration
The ulceration has destroyed the epiglottis leaving a nodular margin and the aryepiglottic folds are swollen, irregular and partly destroyed. The pharyngeal portion of the tongue, the valleculae and the lateral walls of the pharynx are ulcerated to the level of the tonsils. Microscopically there is considerable fibrous thickening beneath the mucosa and around the epiglottic fibrocartilage and there is some desquamation of the mucous membrane with chronic catarrh of the mucous glands.
