Description of specimen:
Three slices of pancreas have been mounted. This complete transection (largest slice) of the tail of the pancreas well demonstrates the essential changes of acute pancreatitis. It shows atrophy. The loss of pancreatic parenchyma is occurring secondary to the chronic inflammatory process. The dilated pancreatic duct can be seen in cross-section. Its wall exhibits dense fibrosis. The inflammation occurred secondary to duct obstruction.
Microscopical examination:
Cross-section of the pancreas showing advanced chronic pancreatitis. The ducts are dilated and only small foci of dark-staining acinar and islet tissue survive amid the extensive fibrosis.
