Around a central depressed cicatrix part of which shows deep pigmentation, a smooth, rounded, yellowish, raised margin indicates neoplasmic infiltration and passes circumferentially into a whitish infiltration of the neighbouring skin. Beyond the cicatricial portion a flattened, pigmented area and a pigmented, somewhat pedunculated tumour indicate extension of the melanoma. On section the cicatricial portion of the skin is much increased in thickness, appears dense and shows localized pigmentation.
