TitleLiver, chronic abscess
Creator A. J. C. Hamilton
DescriptionWet specimen.
Section of a portion of a liver, showing a chronic abscess. From a naval and merchant seaman aged 40 years who on arriving home from abroad was admitted to hospital supposed to be suffering from enteric fever with enlargement of the liver. Later he developed a cough and was sent to a sanatorium where the abscess of the liver was discovered and aspirated and the pus found to be sterile. Later when a repetition of the aspiration failed the abscess was opened and drained and he did not long survive the operation.
The section of the liver with a thickened portion of diaphragm attached shows in its substance an irregular ragged-walled cavity surrounded by a consolidated condensed fibrous capsule. Microscopic examination failed to find amoebae.
