Liver, cirrhosis and Spleen, splenomegaly

Object numberGC.14585
TitleLiver, cirrhosis and Spleen, splenomegaly
DescriptionLiver and spleen in section. From a man aged 45 years admitted to hospital with a hepatic precoma who died the next day. He had been admited for treatment of cirrhosis in hospital twice previously.
The liver shows well marked cirrhosis and the variation in size of the nodules suggests that it is of post-necrotic type. On the cut surface the hyperplastic nodules are set in vascular scar tissue.
The spleen was 5 times the normal weight and the wrinkling of its surface suggests that it was probably even larger before the oesophageal haemorrhage. The normal weight ratio of the liver to spleen is 10:1 but in advanced cases of cirrhosis the spleen may attain equity.
