TitleLiver, showing septic abscesses.
DescriptionSegment of a portion of the liver, between parallel sections 2 cm apart, showing septic abscesses.
From an adult who had appendicitis followed by suppurative pylephlebitis, which is an uncommon thrombophlebitis of the portal vein that conveys blood to the liver.
A considerable portion of the surface of the liver is covered with recent fibrinopurulent material, and throughout the cut surface are numerous irregular cavities of comparatively small size containing pus and tending to become confluent. The abscesses are in relation to the portal canals. Microscopic examination shows extensive necrosis and infiltration of the neighbouring tissue with pyogenic organisms.
