Clinical history:
Female aet 55 years. No symptoms.
On radiological examination a well-defined opacity in relation to the 9th and 11th left dorsal vertebrae was diagnosed pre-operatively as a neural tumour.
At operation a simple cyst was found and enucleated from the posterior mediastinum.
Description of specimen:
This is an ovoid cyst measuring some 2.5 x 1.5 inches, thin-walled and containing an opalescent white substance, soft and fragile. The cyst wall is thin and translucent with very few fine blood vessels coursing on its surface.
Histology shows this to be an oesophageal reduplication.
