Mediastinum showing a tumour.

Object numberGC.13967
TitleMediastinum showing a tumour.
DescriptionMediastinum showing a tumour.
The patient, a factory worker, suffered from recurrent attacks of acute respiratory illness, but tested negative for tuberculosis.
It was found he had a mediastinal tumour which was removed. Both pleural cavities were opened and communication between the tumour and both lungs demonstrated.
The specimen shows a globular cystic mass measuring some 4 inches in diameter with smooth external surface on which distended venous channels are prominent. The mass has shelled out from the surrounding connective tissue cleanly.
The cut surface reveals the cystic character of the mass projecting into the large central cavity are smooth lobulated masses of more solid tissue arising from the cyst wall. The wall of the cyst is widely variable in thickness, showing in places within it small cysts and nodules of solid tissue - in other areas it is relatively think and smooth. When the more solid tissue has been sectioned some variation in colour and texture suggest a mixed character.
