TitleJoseph Lister's Frock Coat
DescriptionFrock coat owned by Lord Lister and donated to the College. The coat is a double breasted frock coat with three buttons on each side at the front. Extensive stiching is evident on the interior and the sleeves are lined in coloured silk.
Conditions in operating theatres prior to antisepsis were appalling by modern standards. Most people were admitted in their ordinary clothes and surgeons operated in a suit and frock coat. This coat belonged to Joseph Lister and similar coats would be worn by a surgeon when operating. It was often a badge of honour amongst surgeons to have blood and stains on it from previous operations. The lack of hygiene and the perception of cleanliness were ultimately changed by Lister’s introduction of antiseptic techniques.
