Carcinoma of the transverse colon
Object numberGC.14028
TitleCarcinoma of the transverse colon
DescriptionCarcinoma of the transverse colon. From a 50 year old male, with two years history of abdominal discomfort. 6 weeks vomiting and diarrhoea with marked abdominal pain. Marked loss of weight.
Specimen shows an advanced carcinoma with a jejuno-colic fistula. A small portion of gastric mucosa from the greater curvature is also included at the upper margin.
The fistula was demonstrable on barium enema and the lesion histologically is a moderately differentiated mucin secreting adenocarcinoma which has invaded extensively to form the fistula.
On the reverse of the specimen several lymph nodes appear slightly and moderately enlarged. While histological confirmation is not available it is likely that some of these are invaded by the neoplasm.
