Clinical history:
From a male aged 44 who developed a rash, chest infection and anorexia 3 months before his death. These cleared but were followed by severe abdominal pain flitting to various parts of the abdomen and by development of severe hypertension accompanied by retinal changes, and by microscopic haematuria. Hypotensive drugs and steroids were given but he developed a fatal Gram-ve septicaemia.
Description of specimen:
Colon - Ischaemic colitis (polyarteritis). A small portion of colonic wall showing numerous small bile stained shallow ulcers which have resulted from ischaemia due to polyarteritis nodosa.
